HONOLULU – University of Hawaii sophomore Cindy Nguyen fell short in the NCAA Women’s Singles Tennis Championships first round Wednesday, losing to Clemson senior Beatrice Gumulya, 6-1, 6-4, at Waco, Texas.
Nguyen is ranked No. 95 in the nation; Gumulya is No. 60.
Nguyen won the first game of the first set, before Gumulya ran away with the next six in a row. Nguyen again took the first game in the second set, but Gumulya answered by winning the next three games before Nguyen took the fifth game to close to margin to 3-2 and then broke Gumulya’s serve to tie it at 3-3.
Gumulya then broke Nguyen’s serve to go up, 4-3, and held serve to build a 5-3 lead. Nguyen held serve to close to 5-4, but Gumulya took the next game to win the match.
This was Nguyen’s second straight NCAA Singles Championships appearance – she is the only player in program history to qualify. She became the first Rainbow Wahine to be named Conference Player of the Year and has been named as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s “One to Watch” in the southwest region for next season.
